Amsterdam can be a pretty expensive place for a backpack traveller. But, if you venture out and do not go to restaurants for every meal you can find that eating in Amsterdam can be one of the cheapest places in western Europe. Especially at AH, I stayed right near one from the Cosmos Hostel. This is great, a few blocks walk away. On the way you pass by many restaurants but stay focused. We are getting cheap eats here. In AH you can get really fresh and good, ham and cheese croissants, or these delicious waffles with peanut or almond butter. They equate to around $1 and there are three in a pack. Makes a great snack or a grab and go breakfast. This is what I did. Waffle and an apple in the morning before exploring the city.
