Cayo Coco, Cuba for Fly Fishing

Just back from Cuba! This was our third visit there so we fell right into the pace. Some people go there to sit beside the pool but we go there to Fly Fish! Most people, unless you are in the know… don’t realize that Cuba is probably the best fly fishing destination in the Carribbean. The Saltwater flats boast Big Bonefish, amble amounts of Permit, and tons of Tarpon. The bulk of Cuba’s fly fishing destinations have been contracted out by a Spanish company who charges HUGE dollars to fish in their exclusive areas. Cayo Coco is the last of the spots where you can hire a local guide (with boat) and hit the flats for as little as $350 / day. Even if you don’t fish, personally I’d still hire a guide to take you away from all the noise at the hotel and out into the pristine salt flats and backcountry beaches where you won’t see another soul all day. It’s just absolutely beautiful. Book at guide through this site, they will hook you up http://www.holywaters.ca
Cayo Coco itself is a perfect vacation area because there are ample resorts for you to stay, take your pick. We prefer the Melia Cayo Coco, its a smaller Adult only resort, but there is something for everyone there. If you want a day off, cruise into Moron. Its a local city with a population of approximately 60,000 people, check out the old architecture and get yourself some cuban Sandwiches,… mmmmm cuubaaan sandwichessss…. mmmm
