Charlotte, North Carolina for Outdoor Adventure at the Whitewater Center!

Where else can you rock climb, zipline, stand up paddle board, mountain bike and whitewater raft all in the same day? I’m pretty sure nowhere except the US National Whitewater Center. It’s a 15 minute drive outside of Charlotte and is an entire day of fun. So what can you do there? Let’s talk:

Whitewater Rafting – This is the most fun. The “river” is a man-made loop specifically used as a training facility for competitive kayakers and rafters, but they take groups of up to 8 on rafting boats through the rapids. If you don’t act like a chicken, the guides will do all sorts of fun things like spin you around. If it’s the weekend, I recommend making an advance booking.

Flatwater Activities – There’s a natural river (I think the Catabwa?) on premises and you can canoe, kayak and stand up paddleboard on it all day. It’s non-guided, so get your friends and you do you.

Ropes and climbing courses – There’s a bunch of different ropes courses in the woods, a rock climbing wall, and some ziplines that go over the entire whitewater course. There’s one ropes course that’s really difficult and you think you’re going to die, but go with it.

Mountain biking – There’s a few different mountain biking trails – from easy to difficult – and they’re all fun. Word of warning, serious mountain bikers will be out there and might try to run you over. I also trail run on the mountain biking trails, but definitely not on the weekend.

What else – oh, the restaurant is delicious, there’s a great craft beer garden with tons of local foods, every Thursday night in the summer they have live music, they have a race series with running, paddling and biking races almost every month, and you can bring you dog with you if that floats your boat (get it – cause you can float in a boat there).

It’s free to get in, but to do activities there’s fees. You can buy an annual pass, and if you plan on going more than 4 times a year, go with the annual pass. Definitely go, you can thank me later. 🙂

Insider Tip

Someone told me the chef there has some awesome source for amazing sushi tuna – I can’t confirm this but I can confirm that all ahi tuna on the menu is ahmaaaazing.
