I love public art and before my trip to Chicago I did some research into different sculptures and murals around the city. I stumbled on an article about the Oz Park in the Lincoln Park neighborhood and was immediately sure I would go there. Apparently the author of the Wizard of Oz books (some of my favorite books when I was a kid!) lived in Lincoln Park, and when the city wanted to revitalize the neighborhood they build a park in his honor with statues of all the characters from the Wizard of Oz and a playground and gardens.
It was pretty convenient to get to the park from where we were staying in the Fairmont. It was about 30 minutes on the Brown Line with only a short walk. The park itself is really fun and whimsical. It isn’t very big, but the statues are very fun and you can walk through the Emerald Garden or watch families playing at the playground. We spent a little time wandering around and then headed back towards our hotel to get lunch.
