I was in Florida visiting a longtime friend. My stay wasn’t very long (four days), so I had him put together a list of things we just *had* to do before I left. One of those things was diving at the Great Florida Reef. DIVING? I’d been snorkeling, but scuba diving was a new thing for me. To ease my nerves, my friend promised to treat me to lessons, so I agreed.
Around 8:30 in the morning, we met our instructor, who gave us a crash course in diving education. We were diving by about 1 in the afternoon. It was a breathtaking experience. Scary – but breathtaking. It only took several minutes for my uneasiness to go away. I go a lot of places and have seen a lot of beautiful things, but diving in Florida was just something else. To be down there, fully immersed in a totally different environment, with all that striking coral and critters that normal people just don’t see on a daily basis – it was amazing.
