I planned a 4 day tour of Rajasthan, famous for its magnificent forts. And Jodhpur and Jaisalmer have two of the most powerful forts of Rajasthan – Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur and Golden Fort of Jaisalmer. Both these forts are majestic in architecture and colossal in structure.
They are formidable and were built to defend against enemy attacks. They were mighty seats of power and places where the arts flourished under the royal patronage. Today, these are the top tourist sites in Rajasthan and that’s why I decided to visit them and get some good collection of images from here.
The Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur
Mehrangarh Fort is in Jodhpur & was built by the Rajput king, Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, in 1459 AD. This fort stands on the rocky hill and its high location gave an unobstructed view of the country below. It has high walls and natural defences, which defended against the most destructive enemy attacks in those times.
I also saw the cannonball marks on its walls, which is just next to the 2nd gare. Mehrangarh Fort has seven gates build by different kings over the years, and stunning palaces, lavish courtyards, and temples inside, and museum, where you can see the costumes, paintings, armoury, furniture and treasuries of the kings and queens of Marwar.
The Golden Jaisalmer Fort
The Jaisalmer Fort was built in the year 1156 AD by King Rawal Jaisal and is one of the 6 hilltop forts in Rajasthan, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Direct descendants of people who once served the erstwhile kings of Jaisalmer, even today live within the fort.
The fort, because of its yellow sandstone structure, glows with a golden colour and looks more beautiful at the times of sunrise and sunsets. Its huge walls, ramparts, bastions, guard a whole city inside, with palaces, temples, old houses and many other structures.
You can roam around by walking on the many lanes and cobbled streets within the fort. My advice will be to spend an evening at a rooftop restaurant and experience the sunset of Jaisalmer, along with a view of it’s Golden Fort.
When should you visit these forts?
Summers in Rajasthan are hot and the scorching heat of the sun makes it impossible to venture outside and do sightseeing. If you want to see Mehrangarh Fort or Jaisalmer Fort, then winter is the right season. October to March is perfect for sightseeing.
There are clear skies and a cool climate which makes it best for touring these forts. Morning is the best time of the day when you can capture breathtaking images of the fort and the scenic panoramas of the city from the top of the forts.
What more activities one can enjoy in Jodhpur and Jaisalmer?
Apart from visiting these forts, I also visited other tourist places in Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. I really like the tour of Sachchiya Mata Temple, popularly called as Osiyan Mata Temple near Jodhpur, is famous for its intricately carved structure.
For more adventure, you can also go on a horse safari at Rohet Garh. The well-bred horses are of fine pedigree and are known for their graceful beauty, stamina and endurance. It is a splendid opportunity to explore the desert landscape, meet local tribes, and soak in the culture.
And the best tour in both Jodhpur and Jaisalmer was the Desert Safari at Sam Sand Dunes near Jaisalmer which gives a unique chance to see the rolling sand dunes of Thar Desert.
You can also check Chetram Voyages tour packages for Jaisalmer & Jodhpur to know more on how to plan a holiday trip for Jaisalmer. Plus do check their blog post on Top 10 camps in Sam and Khuri sand dunes of Jaisalmer, which share some good insights on how to enjoy the desert safari activities at Jaisalmer.
How to reach Jodhpur & Jaisalmer?
Jodhpur has an Airport, Railway Station & is also well connected with roads from all cities in Rajasthan. So, reaching Jodhpur isn’t tricky.
But for Jaisalmer, I would suggest to book train tickets in advance, or reach Jodhpur Airport and hire a taxi to reach Jaisalmer. Plus in the year 2017, a new airport started in Jaisalmer but only from September to March.
best time to visit Jaisalmer is from August to March
