Convenient to Kauai’s LIH airport and stretching from Lihu’e to Kapa’a, the Coconut Coast offers historical charms paired with modern convenience. From local eateries to cultural estates, there’s plenty to explore and enjoy any time of year.
Families can relax in island-inspired cottages at Fern Grotto Inn’s Kauai Vacation Rental (http://www.kauaicottages.com). Located just a few miles from the airport, yet a world away from the everyday, Fern Grotto Inn offers authentic Kauai accommodations for families of all sizes. For larger groups, the Ohana House is a great spot to call home for a week. Imagine the luxury of a 1200-square foot home with a spacious living room, full kitchen, and three bedrooms to relax in during your time in Kauai. For smaller families, a number of other cottages are available in varying sizes. During my stay at Fern Grotto Inn, my spouse and I stayed in Canal Cottage B, a perfect oasis for couples or solos, or for families with one child. No matter the size of your party, there’s a private cottage to meet your needs at this quiet, serene Kauai Vacation Rental. Guests have full access to laundry facilities, a staple-stocked kitchen, and all the beach toys you’ll need to enjoy the Wailua River or neighboring ocean beach.
Fern Grotto Inn is just outside Kapa’a Town, a historic village that has all you need for groceries, dining, and local boutiques. If adventure is on your itinerary, you’ll have backyard access to Wailua River which you can explore with kayaks provided for guests. Take a leisurely paddle and see “heiau”—archaeological remains of sacred sites—as this river was once home to royalty. Then paddle, hike, or drive your way to the famous Wailua Falls—recognizable from the opening scenes of TV’s Fantasy Island.
A short drive away is Kilohana Estate (http://kilohanakauai.com), a wonderful property to explore. Take the kids for a ride on the Plantation Railway, or sample and sip at Koloa Run Tasting Room and Company Store. Be sure to dine on island-inspired dinners at Gaylord’s Restaurant.
Neighboring Fern Grotto Inn Kauai Vacation Rental is the Smith Family Garden Luau (http://www.smithskauai.com). The family has welcomed guests for over fifty years and the Luau experience includes a garden tour, cocktails, dinner buffet, and entertainment. The buffet feast features a Kalua pig roasted in an earthen imu oven and guests may witness the unveiling prior to dinner. Entertainment includes music accompaniment during cocktails and dinner, along with a magnificent Luau featuring Hawaiian hula, Tahitian drum dances, and Samoan fire knife dances. It’s a fabulous evening of entertainment and excellent food.
Fern Grotto Inn cottages are centrally located on the Coconut Coast and I loved the ease of exploring the area. It’s a beautiful drive to the end of the road, where you can see where the Napali Coast begins and enjoy some beach time along the north shore, grab a coffee in Hanalei, and stroll through quaint villages and towns along the way. On your way back to your cottage, you’ll want to stop for a bite at Shrimp Station in Kapa’a Town (http://theshrimpstation.com). The garlic shrimp is a must. Another local treat you’ll want to taste is at Bubba Burgers (http://www.bubbaburger.com). I highly recommend their Kauai grass-fed beef burgers and their fries are excellent, too.
For more family exploration, take a tour of Steelgrass Farm (http://steelgrass.org). The eight-acre farm is home to gorgeous chocolate trees and the tour takes guests from “branch to bar.” The tour includes a tasting where guests can sample an assortment of local and world chocolates. The gift shop also includes local goods and harvested treats like Kauai honey.
My stay at Fern Grotto Inn was a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. The peaceful accommodations at this Kauai Vacation Rental included a private lanai that was perfect for enjoying coffee during sunrise. With plenty of fruit trees throughout the gardens, it was such a treat being able to pluck fresh star fruit from the trees and experience the island’s treasures. Plus, the location couldn’t be beat for exploring the Coconut Coast and taking scenic ocean drives.
