Kuala Lumpur for Kuala Lumpur

It is after midnight and you are looking for somewhere to grab some food but where do you go – after all, most restaurants will be closed by now right? In most other cities, you are probably destined to hit some 24-hour fast food joint for a burger and fries but here when in Kuala Lumpur we like to do things a little differently. Malaysians are known for their melting pot of cultures, therefore the variety of food offered is bound to be varied, but did you know that they serve food at all hours of the night (or morning)!

Traveling in Malaysia is quite convenient since it has some major bus terminals and express buses are the preferred mode of transport here. Tickets for which can be booked online from redbus.

Hayaki Cafe

Not many people would consider Kelantanese food when thinking about after-midnight food options but this place has certainly earned its place on our list. If you have never been to this cafe, you are missing out: they have a few branches around the city but we recommend you check out their round-the-clock Damansara Utama outlet if you are ever in need of sustenance outside the usual dinner hours.   Hayaki Cafe serves local dishes in comfort food style – huge portions of rice, a generous amount of sides and plump, juicy meat. Our favourites include the nasi kukus ayam berempah (steamed coconut milk rice with spiced fried chicken) and nasi kerabu ayam percik (white rice with spicy barbecued chicken), all liberally sprinkled with chicken or fish gravy.

Kaw Kaw Burger Bakar

The crack about 24-hour fast food burger joints notwithstanding, if you are in the mood for a burger after midnight, please don’t head to a McDonald’s – when in KL, do as KL-ites do and grab a burger bakar! Literally translated it means ‘burnt burger’, but that’s not what it is. A burger bakar consists of grilled chicken, beef or seafood patties, sandwiched between lightly toasted, buttered buns and topped with bacon slices, cheese and other toppings.
