These grottoes were hacked into the hills in the western edge of the Gobi Desert about 1600 years ago. Within the caves are artwork and statues developed from more than a thousand years ago, with many with their pigmentation still colorfully obvious. This is an extensive place and everybody is herded around with guides, in Chinese as well as English. There are hundred of caves, but the tour only bring you to about a dozen with the rest being locked up. You are free to tack on to another group after your 90 minutes tour end, which may allow you to visit a different set of caves, depending on the group.
