I go to the Monterey Sports Car Festival every year. I have stayed in numerous hotels and motels, always looking for a bargain on race weekend. There are a number of really clean, affordable places to stay if you avoid the peninsula itself, The El Castell is just one of many reasonable motels in the area. The race track is inland from the peninsula, and the lodging accommodations are more reasonable on the east side of Highway 1. There also are some Bread and Breakfast accommodations near the race track that are pricey, but very private. If you are into privacy and having quiet time to unwind from an exciting day at the race track, look into the local places that offer easy access to the race track, and a tranquil evening mixed with fine dining and relaxation.
