NOBU San Diego for Legendary Culinary Creations

This November, NOBU San Diego will celebrate the tenth anniversary of its Gaslamp Quarter location, housed within Hard Rock Hotel San Diego. Featuring the signature dishes of Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and a number of creations from Executive Chef David Meade, NOBU San Diego is a cozy contemporary venue with tastes for every palate.

On a recent visit to San Diego, I had a chance to sample the infamous NOBU menu. Selections are meant for sharing, family-style, which meant my spouse and I ordered a variety of plates to nibble and sample. Portions are quite generous, so we could have easily had another couple along to share the bounty. A party of two could easily fill up on three or four plates. The menu includes ‘NOBU Classic’ and ‘NOBU Now’ items, so whether you desire signature dishes Chef Nobu is famous for, or are eager to sample more trendy selections, there are plenty of options for everyone.

From the Classic menu, we tried the Black Cod Miso—one of the Chef’s legendary dishes that put him on the culinary map. This was recommended by Ian, who provided excellent service and suggestions throughout the evening. The cod had delicate hints of sweet and sour, and a beautiful presentation that made this dish memorable. Also from the Classic menu, the Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeno was a sensational delight with a refreshing texture and smooth taste.

From the Now menu, the Lobster Tempura with Creamy Spicy Lemon was hands down my favorite plate of the evening. Generous sweet portions of lobster were prepared in an airy light tempura with just enough zesty lemon to offer a bit of kick for the tastebuds. This was one of those dishes you won’t easily forget, and it’s something I’ve noted as a must-repeat treat for next time I visit.

In addition to those mouthwatering dishes, we shared a palate cleansing Truffled Baby Spinach Salad and, for Yakimono, the NY Prime Strip with Teriyaki Sauce was a savory plate to round out our meal. The bar menu is extensive and on the recommendation from our server, we opted for Kirin Light, a crisp clean beer that rounded out the flavors and textures we enjoyed.
