Old is located in between panjim to ponda..its around 11kms frm panjim..Churchs r biggest in goa..St Francis xavier body which is almost 450 years old has been preserved in tis church n exposition is after evry 10 years..feast is celebrated on 3rd December every year..lot of tourists visit tis place every day. Situated on the banks of the river Mandovi, the city was founded by the Bijapur Sultanate in the 15th century. The rulers surrounded the city with moats and built grand palaces and mosques within.
- Saint Francis Xavier was born in 7th April 1506 3rd December 1552 was a pioneering Roman Catholic missionary born in the Kingdom of Navarre and co-founder of the Society of Jesus.
- He was a student of Ignatius of Loyola and one of the first seven Jesuits, dedicated at Montmartre in 1534.
- He led an extensive mission into Asia, mainly in the Portuguese Empire of the time. He was influential in the spreading and upkeep of Catholicism most notably in India, but also ventured into Japan, Borneo, the Moluccas, and other areas which had thus far not been visited by Christian missionaries. In these areas, being a pioneer and struggling to learn the local languages in the face of opposition, he had less success than he had enjoyed in India. - The view of old Goa church from the inside, I like the beauty of this church and its pictures, antiques and beautiful design, inside the church. The interior of this church is excellent. The old city was constructed by the Bijapur Sultanate in the 15th century, and served as capital of Portuguese India.
