I had the great pleasure of spending a long weekend at this 52-acre collection of beach huts and lagoon cottages. It is the absolute definition of barefoot luxury and between the deep history (Ian Fleming wrote all of the James Bond novels here and Chris Blackwell- founder of Island Records- heads up the resort), beautiful beaches, magical swimmable lagoon, and wealth of activities, I was peeking around every corner looking for the next hidden gem! While there, I was completely surrounded by true authenticity and charming local culture, and even though it was nearly fully booked, I hardly noticed anyone around me. No wonder it’s a favorite spot for celebrities seeking a little privacy! In addition, I was able to visit the historic Firefly Estate for sundown views and cocktails. Just a few minutes from GoldenEye resort, nearly a thousand years ago the site was declared a sacred burial ground. Centuries later Captain Henry Morgan placed a lookout at the property and dug an escape tunnel to Port Maria. In 1948, Sir Noel Coward, the legendary playwright, composer, director, actor and singer, bought the property and built his house. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, Firefly became a retreat for friends of Coward, like Errol Flynn, Sean Connery, Laurence Olivier, Elizabeth Taylor and Queen Elizabeth II. Firefly Estate is perfect for special events and weddings, but also for a little history and folklore! One of the best parts of the weekend was learning all about the work that GoldenEye’s (and all of the properties of Island Outpost) Oracabessa Foundation does for the community. From increasing employment in Jamaica, to protecting the beautiful bay and water, to utilizing sport to build positive and engaged youth; a visit to GoldenEye (and the other amazing Island Outpost resorts) makes a real difference in the lives of local Jamaicans. And, you can really dive into the spirit of giving by participating in local projects and other hands-on activities while you are there! I was able to release newly-hatched endangered sea turtles right into the ocean! Your vacation can grow into a fun and meaningful “voluntourism” trip while enjoying the sun and sand at GoldenEye!
You can actually tour the Ian Fleming villa, where he wrote all of the James Bond novels, while you are staying at GoldenEye! In fact, you can actually rent the Ian Fleming villa for your stay!
