I’ve visited Phipps a couple of times now. The first was in the summer, which was especially cool because their butterfly habitat was open. The second time (recently), I experienced it in the winter, around Christmas time. An enormous conservatory filled with every imaginable flora is captivating at any time of year, but they really go out of their way to make it something special during the holidays.
The way that the place is set up, each sort of plant has an area – a desert room for the cacti and other succulents, an orchid room, etc. Around Christmas, not only do they decorate the whole place in lights, but they also bring in a huge array of poinsettias and evergreens, also brilliantly decorated, and install their Winter Light Garden – a beautiful arrangement of large, illuminated shapes and fountains and trees. The snow on the ground when I attended didn’t hurt the festive atmosphere either. My mother and niece enjoyed it as much as I did! (Maybe more than, in the case of the little one.) We had a snack at Cafe Phipps and then did some Christmas shopping in town.
