Playa del Carmen has a reputation for being a place to see and be seen. Being a single girl living in New York, my wallet doesn’t really allow for a vacation to Jersey, let alone Mexico. But I managed to luck out this time, since my mom was already going with a couple of her friends and invited me to come along. YES. It would have been a welcome invitation at any time of year, but this was December. In New York. I was *far* over being cold and wet.
These women, though quite a bit older than me, were up for all the adventure the place had to offer. Yeah, we spent a lot of time lounging on the beach and sipping delicious frozen beverages (um, completely okay by me), but we also swam in the Rio Secreto (literally, “secret river” – an amazing underground river and collection of caves), day-partied at the Carolina Daylight Club, and spent a day diving and viewing an incredible array of colorful fish. Although I love my hometown, I felt like I’d never be ready to leave this sun-drenched paradise for the chilly arms of NYC.
