Although I was born in Portland, my boyfriend has far more experience in the area, so I let him lead the way when we went down to visit some of his friends for a weekend. We ran all over the place, and landed comfortably at Charlie Horse – a dark, quasi-dank, western themed hole in the wall in SE Portland.
It’s hard to tell if my love of the place was totally founded in the atmosphere, drinks, music – or if it was the unabashedly positive vibe running through our group. Either way, we were there for the better part of the night. The drinks were good, as drinks from dive bars go. I’ve heard they have a pretty solid food menu as well, but I’m not sure any of us actually ate. Hanging out with a huge group of people you don’t know can be sort of daunting, but the would-be social anxiety totally melted into the hardwood floors the moment we arrived.
We capped the night perfectly with slices from Hammy’s Pizza. Apparently I was feeling brazen in my…eh…alcohol-infused state, because I ordered two slices. If you’ve been there, you understand how impressive it is that I was able to finish them both. If you haven’t, put it on your to-do list. Either way, I attribute my avoidance of the next day’s hangover to those two angelic, cheesy triangles.
