Though it is nowhere near as exotic as the infamous San Diego Zoo, but you definitely do not need to worry about driving to it and dealing with an added stress of parking. Instead, just pay for parking somewhere downtown and catch the MAX Red Line or Blue Line and get off at the Washington Park station. I think the Max ride there was more crowded than the actual zoo itself but I also made sure to visit it mid-day on a Tuesday. It was a warmer than average early fall day and all the animals were very active in their respective habitats. I think the coolest thing was the penguin exhibit because you can stand next to windows that allow you to view them as they swim. That and I have an affinity for penguins ever since Surfs Up came out some years ago. One big thing I noticed was the heavy focus on creating as natural of an environment as is possible for a zoo. Of course this is Oregon, one of the more animal rights active states in the union. Aside from that, I would highly suggest making an attempt to visit it during Zoo Lights. The display is magical for adults and kids alike.
