Separated at birth, the flowers Humulus Iupulus (hops) and Cannabis (marijuana) have been cultivated in distinctly contrasting environments. Though both have seen their days in court, Humulus was able to get its act together and become a highly accepted flower with the unwavering support of society. Cannabis, with all its culture and genetic similarities, grew through the strength of street knowledge, quickly becoming a Schedule 1 drug and landing on the wrong side of the law. While both have known of each other for most of their lives, these twin flowers really got to spend quality time together at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival.
While the Indica Double IPA by Dads & Dudes Breweria is only available on draught at their brewery in Aurora, Colo., they also brew the DANK IPA (pictured below) as part of their new Canna-Beer Series — the first commercially brewed beers with cannabidiol (CBD).
Since the twins’ dual appearance in Colorado, brewers like California’s Thorn Street Brewery has created the OG HighPA Session IPA and a fellow Oregonian friend in craft, Coalition Brewing, has created the Two Flowers IPA, a dank and woody brew with a pithy follow up, accentuated with a touch of chai spice.
If you live in Portland and have never had the chance to taste this holy union of the twin flowers, Coalition is partnering with East Burn (1800 E. Burnside St., Portland, Ore. 97214) on Thursday to bring you a very special five-course Beer Belly Dinner.
The evening will consist of presentations from Chef Brandon Smoak, Bill Stewart, and Head Brewer Elan Walsky. Each attendee will have the opportunity to win an item from the exclusive new hemp clothing line by award-winning local designer Jason Calderon of West Daily. Tickets are $65 per person.
