Powell’s City of Books is Mecca for bookworms. I try to make my personal pilgrimage on a yearly basis. My most recent trip was last fall and I spent an absurd amount of money on books and clever little gifts. As I usually do, I started with a stroll through some of my favorite sections: cookbooks, fantasy, and the highlighted contemporary fiction at the main entrance. I grabbed an armload of books and retired to the coffee shop to read and enjoy a pastry. On past visits, I’ve guiltily looked up to realize I had finished an entire novel in the coffee shop and returned it to the shelves to leave with a fresh book. This time I only had an hour or two, so I stuck to shopping. There are always too many to take home and the Powell’s staff does such a great job of curating suggestions that I snap pictures of the covers of promising books that don’t make the cut to order later or get at my local library. That way my yearly Powell’s visit keeps delivering for months to come!
