If you’ve spent any amount of time in the Queenstown area, it’s likely you’ve heard of this place. Hailed by many of the New Zealand travelers I’ve met as an unparalleled delicacy, it’d been on my to-eat list for a long while prior to my trip.
I was in New Zealand, working as part of the WWOOF program and had extra moments here and there to explore around. I had a free couple of hours in the evening on a Tuesday, so I figured I’d head on over to town to experience this apparently once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Despite the hyped-up chatter I heard from everyone who talked about the holy Ferg experience, I did not expect such an immense volume of hungry diners. The queue was HUGE. On a Tuesday? Insanity. But patience is a virtue I’ve worked hard to groom, so I ordered my basic Fergburger with Swiss cheese and waited for my number to be called.
By the time it arrived, I was more than ready to slink out of the crowds, so I walked and ate. The rumors were true! I’m typically pretty wary of anything that gets a lot of people excited. I mean, I’m not a cynic or anything – I just know that people have the tendency to bandwagon about these sorts of things. But this was different. They were just…right. The thing was perfectly cooked, the sauce was incredibly flavorful and balanced, and the veggies were crispy. As for how many times I returned during my three month stay… let’s just say my arteries and thighs were probably happy that I spent much of those days performing physically strenuous tasks.
They’re open 21 hours a day, so if you’re craving a burger at some ghastly hour of the night…they’ve got you covered.
