Did a guys trip and a day hike of Mt Townsend which was only 20 minutes drive from the Modern Cabin Retreat. The company was ok and we kept the prior evening’s consumption to a reasonable level!
Highlight of the trip was a hike up Mt Townsend, about 15 minutes away from the town of Quilcene.
Trail grade is 20% first 3 miles to within 0.5 mile of summit. Mt. Townsend is a long broad summit. The trail along the summit ranges from flat up to 8% grades. All in its about 10 miles. Beautiful views at the top and well worth doing. It was summer but still pretty chilly up there from wind. On clear days you can see the water, but we didn’t get that opportunity!
Afterward there is good refreshment at the 101 brewpup in quilcene. It’s small, but the food is pretty good and as the name suggests, they brew their own beer.
Directions from Quilcene: On a mostly paved road but I wouldn’t drive something too snazzy! – travel one mile south, then turn right onto Penny Creek Road. Follow Penny Creek for 1.4 miles, staying left at the Y, and continue to the Forest Service boundary and paved FS Road 27. Proceed on FS 27 for another 10.6 miles to FS 2760. Follow FS 2760 for .7 miles to the trailhead.
