Bridgestone filed a lawsuit in September 2017 with the Shanghai Intellectual Property Court alleging that Fangxing’s use of its patented truck tire tread pattern to manufacture and sell tires was a patent infringement. . In May 2018, a ruling was issued ordering Fangxing to suspend infringement and pay damages of RMB620,000 (approximately ¥ 9.8 million). An appeal was subsequently filed in June of the same year, but the lower court ruling was upheld by the Shanghai Superior People’s Court, and Bridgestone’s winning case was finalized.
The patents covered are related to the tread pattern of the company’s truck tire “R118,” and are products that Bridgestone independently developed for the Asian market, including China.
