Alcatraz has mystery in its own accord, but it is also one of the key places for San Francisco’s “things to do list”. Who doesnt want to take a cruise around the island, learn some history, and get to explore one of the most mysterious places on the west coast?
That’s exactly what I did. I started with the Alcatraz Island Cruise, I found their site online and it seemed interesting. We boarded the Hornblower Hybrid and immediately they start telling you fascinating pieces of history and information about Alcatraz. Alcatraz is now home of some of the most rare flowers and plants, marine wildlife, and thousands of sea birds. The island served as both a harbor defense fort and a military prison. At one point it was even under American Indian Occupation that started in 1969 after the prison closed. I thought this was extremely interesting. We walked all around the island, and of course the infamous prison.
