One of the favorite retreats among Belgraders during the hot summer months when temperatures hit 35+ degrees is definitely Ada Ciganlija, located about half an hour away from the city’s most central part. Ada is a lake in the Sava River that has been artificially turned into a peninsula, making it easy to reach on foot or on a bicycle. Both the river coast and the island coast have been turned into beach areas, lined with various restaurants, cafes and businesses that offer anyone a chance to try their hand at water sports, bungee jumping and all sorts of things. If you don’t own your own bicycle, there are many places you can rent out, at a very affordable price. Moreover, if you’re into that, there is also a secluded nudist area of the beach. If you’d rather keep quiet, you can go into the forest area of the island, where I often relax and get some shade. This is where you will also find designated areas for camping or barbecuing. After you had your day of fun at this faux island, you can either go back into town for a good night out, or if you’re still feeling adventurous – get a boat ride from the north side of the island that will take you to the other side of the Sava River, where you can explore the area of Novi Beograd (New Belgrade).
