It is in Ernakulam , Kerala, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, popularly known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is situated at the foot of Western Ghats. The sanctuary expands 25km of the north side of Periyar River.
This is very much interesting place to visit, the serenity is the most attractive thing here. You can enjoy one evening with your loved one. Here you can find some tree house, i.e, some huts are artificially made on the branches of trees and you can spend some days there. That will be a life time experience for you!
At the entrance you will just enter to the butterfly garden and this sight must amaze you. I bet you have never seen so many varieties of butterfly in your entire life and all are in a not so big garden , they are flying freely. The abundance of colourful butterflies must excite you and the sight is very much soothing for your eyes and soul also.As the forest is covered with a large variety of tropical deciduous and evergreen variety of trees, it provides a safe haven to all feathered creatures. Apart from numerous species of birds, the sanctuary also provides shelter to as many as 28 species of animals. The most common dwellers of this sanctuary include the Leopard, Sloth Bear and Porcupine. Animals like elephants can also be found occasionally.
Birds like Srilankan Frogmouth, Racket tailed Drongo, Bronzed Drongo, Whitebellied Treepie, Shama, Yellow-browed Bulbul, Rufous Babbler, Malabar Parakeet, Whitebellied Blue Flycatcher, Malabar Grey Hornbill, are some of the birds that can be easily seen here.
During winter season many Himalayan birds come here ,so best time to visit is from october to march
