I’d only really heard of the salt flats from movies. I think I first saw it in the movie SLC Punk as a teenager, then again in The Master when they’re all out riding that Triump motorcycle around the scenic, desolate Bonneville salt flats. We were one a road trip through the area so we decided to check it out.
It’s a very bizarre scene, the salt flats. It’s just miles and miles of salt, like 30,000, I think I read. We explored the nearby military buildings along with a few other photo op spots then headed on. They have a gift shop in town and somewhere to grab lunch, but we had a cooler with sandwiches from a previous stop, so after doing our thing at Bonneville, we packed up and headed on back down the road.
I could definitely see coming back out here and it would be fun to ride a motorcycle out there, but I’m not sure how much else there is to do. It’s close enough of a drive to Salt Lake though that it’d be worth posting up and camping there for a night to find before heading towards another of Salt Lake’s many other mountains or lakes.
