Not sure where Curaçao is on the map? That’s because Curaçao remains off-the-beaten track of Caribbean destinations, which may just be why it’s been able to preserve its unique culinary offerings! Ideally located in the southern portion of the Caribbean, well beneath the hurricane belt, Curaçao lies between the islands of Aruba and Bonaire.

Centuries of Cuisine Influences

curacao foodThe Caribbean, in general, is a literal melting pot of cuisine influences. Curaçao, specifically, has had significant Spanish, British, and Portuguese culinary influences, but by far the two biggest players when it comes to Curaçao’s food are African and Dutch. Which makes sense considering the major ethnic group is Afro-Caribbean, followed by Dutch.

Now that your interest is piqued and your taste buds are listening let’s take a look at the unique dishes you can plan to try when you visit!

  • Bitterballen – Fried breaded balls filled with beef or other meats… yum! Bitterballen is eaten as a snack, with the “bitter” part of the name referring to the bitter herb flavored liquors that used to be served alongside the snack.
  • Fuchi + Tutu – Typically found as a side dish or appetizer, Funchi is similar to polenta. It’s made of cornmeal seasoned with butter and salt which is poured and then stirred in boiling water. Sometimes left mushy in a mound, other times served stiffer having been molded into a dumpling shape. Tutu is similar to Funchi, the difference being mashed black-eyed peas.
  • Kabritu – A delicious and extremely flavorful stew featuring cubed goat meat (or lamb) accompanied by onions, garlic, tomatoes, and jalapenos. Usually served with the Caribbean-style rice and beans.

    Keshi Yena – If a signature Curaçaoan dish had to be chosen, Keshi Yena would probably be the one! Known as “stuffed cheese,” it’s a traditional dish made with chicken, vegetables, seasonings, and raisins all of which are stuffed into a cheese shell. The cheese shell is usually Edam or Gouda. Delicious and comforting!

  • Stoba – Stoba simply means stew, and there are so many different kinds on Curaçao you should try! Many popular Stoba variations include beef, goat, cucumber, pumpkin, and more!
  • Stroopwafels – Dutch to the core, Stroopwafels are a delicious sweet treat comprised of two waffle cookies with a thin layer of caramel-like syrup in between.

The above list is certainly not all-inclusive, but it should be enough to get you started! As mentioned, the two main culinary influences are Afro-Caribbean and Dutch, but you will find hints of South American cuisine and even some Portuguese Jewish influences! There’s no way to go on a culinary adventure in Curaçao without also learning about the whys behind each culture and ethnic influence, which will greatly enhance the overall experience!
